Arrrr, Matey! Welcome to the Ft. Myers Beach Pirate Festival! This family fun event donates all profits to the Ft. Myers Beach Lions Club, a good cause, indeed. All weekend Pirates roam the streets, mermaids splash in the fountain, music plays, and vendors peddle their wares. A pirate encampment by the East Coast Privateers brings history alive with their weapons exhibitions, fight demonstrations, music, and stories. There are fancy pirates, scaled down pirates, lady pirates, captains, and more! For the children, there is a costume contest and a scavenger hunt. For the adults, a pub crawl. Celtic Mayhem and The Amazing Kenny, both top notch entertainment performed. Also on hand were the unique pirate hip hop group, Captain Dan and the Scurvy Crew. No Way Jose, a reggae act, performed on the streets. A lively sea and land battle was a highlight of the day! Two pirate ships fired on each other while pirates on land shot at them. Gunpowder filled the air! Cries of, “Fire in the hold!” echoed over the water! Mermaids offered photo ops. A balloon artist created all kinds of animals. The Coast Guard, newspaper, and other civic groups and businesses manned booths. Many of the local pubs and restaurants had coupons for a free drink for the pub crawl. The cost was $25 for 10 drinks, good for the entire weekend, so no need to rush. A leather medallion was the ticket. Once a customer had 9 drinks, she/he received a souvenir T shirt. The water taxi offered a discount, too. Booths carried all manner of bright, shiny things, toys, clothing, pirate wear, and artwork. Everywhere we walked were families in costume, kids in costume, and adults in costume. Pirate talk was everywhere. The atmosphere was festive! People were friendly. We met some of our friends. Admission is free. Souvenirs, food, and drinks are available at a reasonable cost. There is plenty of parking. Portable restrooms are set up. We hope to return next year!
