Battle of Fort Pierce
Welcome to Fort Pierce, 1865! There never was a real battle of Ft. Pierce during the Civil War, but there were battles in Florida. The re-enactors mix a bit of fiction with the truth, and an exciting battle results. The two sides exchange fire across the canal. The Union charges over the bridge, driving the Confederate forces back. Guns and cannons boom! 1860s Senator Yulee does a bit of campaigning. Before and after the battle, visitors can wander through a Ft. Pierce reminiscent of the 1860s. Doc’s Office, Saloon, Post Office, and churches share the land with the encampment. Some of the tents have tables, chairs, fire, and gear in front, looking most inviting. Ladies stroll by with hoop skirts swaying. Little children frolic. Merchants sell snacks, Civil War era clothing, books, toys, canteens, and shoes. Admission is $6 per adult, and the living history enactors are eager to tell about artifacts and customs of the time. We learned a lot! Proceeds go to the Explorers, a group of young people learning to hone leadership skills, and serving the community. This is a unique place to spend an afternoon. Look for it on a weekend in early December.
