Kiwanis Medieval Faire 2010

 Kiwanis Medieval Faire 2010

Good gentles, welcome ye to the Faire!  Prithee, enjoy thyselves in eating, drinking, and making merry!   http://www.medieval-faire.com/     This is a two week end event at Lakes Park in Ft. Myers in Lee County.  Kiwanis sponsors the Faire to “promote the well being of the families of Lee County.”  Jousting, the Royal Courts, magic, juggling, singing, swordplay, human chess match, children’s rides and games, period food and drink, including mead await!  And of course, shopping!

Entertainers include many of offthetrails’ favorites:  Empty Hats, Johnny Phoenix, Emrys Fleet, Barely Balanced, the DaVinci brothers, Isaac Fawlkes, and Tribal Circus.  We saw exceptional new acts, too:  Will Fiddler and Wyldefyre.  Empty Hats sings Celtic music; Johnny escapes from a straightjacket; Emrys tells rat jokes; and Tribal Circus climbs and swings from the silk.  We return to see them over and over because they are so engaging!  For the kids, we recommend Isaac, Emrys, and Bunnies in Peril.  Johnny and Empty Hats are more adult entertainment, although the kids will enjoy them, too.  The entertainers “pass the hat” as a way to earn their living.  It’s customary but not obligatory to throw in a dollar or two, or more if you really liked the show.

Period rides like the Carosselo and games like the ax throw will keep the kids amused.  They can even ride the war horses!  Usual prices are $2 or $3.

The Human Chess match pitted King Arthur and his court against the Roman Caesar.   Who knew how it would end!  Jousts by the New Riders of the Golden Age make us laugh even as they excite!  Our favorite MC was there, with his wonderful Scottish accent, getting his knights to behave any way he could – all in fun!

Shopping offers merchandise from toy wooden swords to tempered steel ones, period costumes, soaps, incenses, fairies to adopt, music instruments, silver goblets, pirate goods, and so much more.  What fun to shop for unique items!  Buy a hair ornament; get your hair braided, or your face painted!

When hunger strikes, meat and cheese rolls, turkey legs (a classic), stew in a bread bowl, chicken, fish, or shepherd’s pie are sure to please.  There are pastries, too.  And for adults, there is a beer garden serving beer and mead, a honeyed wine.  Prices vary, with a bottle of water going for $2, meat and cheese rolls, for $7, and a plate of fish and rice with salad for $10.  Note:  At this Faire, you must first purchase tickets to buy the food.

The Medieval Faire is a first rate day of family entertainment, grown up entertainment, and anything in between.  The 5 year olds, 15 year olds, and 30-somethings enjoy it as much as the 70- somethings.  We highly recommend it.  For $13 per person, enjoy the faire from 9:30 until 6:30.  Note:  Bring cash, because at this Faire, many vendors, and the ticket booth, only accept cash.
