GEORGIA RENFEST 2010
Welcome to the Georgia Renaissance Festival! Eat, drynk and be merrie! This renfest has permanent buildings, which greatly enhance the experience of stepping back in time to the 1500’s, and meeting Henry VIII and Queen Anne! Entertainment includes many fascinating acts. The Tortuga Twins will make you laugh. All three young men are talented. Yes, the joke is that there are three twins. The pirates will dazzle you. Other entertainment is the Royal Lippazan Stallions, jousting, Ded Bob, Breaking Point, Flying Debris Show, Maypole dancing, and many more. When you get hungry, feast on turkey legs, spinach pie, delicious gazpacho, beef or chicken gyros, New this year are the corn on the cob, chicken pot pie,and sweet potatoe pie. For a change of pace, visit the Peacock Inn, where you sit down at a table clothed table and choose a tea from a very long list of teas and tisanes, or herbal teas. Order tea fare such as Scotch eggs, Cornish pasties, or tea sandwiches. Real china cups, saucers are plates are placed on your table. Beer, mead, and soft drinks are offered around the shire of Newcastle. Shopping? Clothing, glassware, plants, candles, scented oils, toys, jewelry, artwork, costumes, pottery, and teas are among the many wares for sale. There is a large children’s area with activities and entertainment for the little ones. Privies, or restrooms, have running water, a real plus. The area is very large, and it would be a good idea to allow two days to see the Georgia Renfest. There are three regions: Olde Towne, the Roayl Highlands, and the Queen’s Garden.
The festival opens at 10:30 and runs to about 6:00. Admission is $19.95 for adults, $8.95 for children 6-12, $17.95 for seniors, at the gate. Discounts can be had buying on line. Second day tickets are discounted. Children under 6 are free.
Last year, we stayed at the Sleep Inn in Fairburn, which is the actual site of the Faire, so we were only about two miles away. Fairburn is about 20 miles southwest of Atlanta. The Sleep Inn is our choice because the price is good – $89 for a spacious and comfortable room with a king sized bed. There is an indoor pool, an expanded continental breakfast, and it’s only two miles from the Georgia Renaissance Festival. We recommend that you drive south towards Peachtree City if you are looking for a restaurant, supermarket, or pharmacy. There are many more choices there. We ate at the Downtown Grill on Georgia State Route 74. We choose three appetizers instead of a full dinner, and took some of it with us. Fried green tomatoes, calamari with a pineapple- orange sauce, and a hummus plate were more than enough! The total for our meal was $26. Our cocktails were $13 for two. Another meal was at Oz in Fairburn. It was full of families and couples, all eating Italian food. Our choices were a calzone, and lasagna with spinach, and two salads. The total price was $26. Beer and wine are offered.
This year, we are at the Comfort Inn in Union City, the official hotel for the Festival. It has an expanded continental breakfast, indoor pool, hot tub and fitness room. It’s conveniently located next to Union Station Mall and several other businesses. We had trouble getting connected to the internet. General Manager Chirag Patel came up to our room and helped us. It was a lengthy and tricky process, and we’re grateful to him. http://garenfest.comfortinn-unioncity.com/
