Scottish Highland Games

Scottish Highland Games

Highland Games began in Scotland during the time the English wouldn’t let them have military drills, due to fears of Scottish insurrection.  The athletics allowed them to keep in shape.  Games include throwing a caber, or 18-20 foot log; the hammer, which is up to 22 lbs; and a 58 lb. throw.  Scots kept in shape participating in these “games” without England becoming upset.  Clans began in the 11th century as part of a complex society.  The tartan is the design on the kilts.  Each clan has a tartan.  This helps identify which clan someone belongs to.  The customs of games, foods, and tartans came to America with the Scottish immigrants.  Today we can learn and enjoy the culture of Scotland by attending the games.  It’s a social event for the clans, a time to meet friends and spend time with family.    The Games are fun!
