Granville, Ohio
GRANVILLE, OH
Welcome to Granville!
Granville, OH is a beautiful little village located about a half hour drive from Columbus, OH. www.granvilleoh.com
It was founded in 1805 and is the home of Denison University, which was founded in 1831. The town is a treasure trove of fascinating boutique shops, restaurants, country inns, bed and breakfasts, and historic homes. The two crown jewels amongst the inns in the town are the Granville Inn, and the Buxton Inn. The Granville is fashioned after an English Tudor manor home and boasts an excellent main dining room and a quaint little bar in the back of the hotel. Bar fare can be ordered there, but you can also order from the main dining room menu and enjoy your dinner in front of the beautiful wood burning fire place. Be sure to order a Granville Ice Tea while at the bar. It’s very similar to the Long Island Ice Tea and you can keep the souvenir glass as a memento of your stay. http://www.granvilleinn.com/ Both the Granville Inn and the Buxton Inn have romantic lodgings and a nice breakfast. Both have ghosts. The Buxton calls itself “The Most Haunted Inn in America.” Make sure that you take time to visit their pub, in the cellar. http://buxtoninn.com/
Whether you visit in the summer or the winter, be sure to include a stop for lunch at the Soup Loft. It’s located above Whit’s Ice Cream parlor and has a wonderful selection of homemade soups, salads, and sandwiches. The owners are Kevin and Denise Ciferno, who started the wonderful little lunch spot after Kevin’s job was outsourced. His wife creates all the delicious foods that are served there and Kevin is always on hand to greet you and make you feel warm and welcome as though you were old friends. A few of our favorites are the Vegetarian Chili, New England Clam Chowder, and sweet Onion Bisque. http://www.granvilleohioonline.com/business/The-Soup-Loft.tml
Another must experience during your stay in Granville is Brews. Brews offers a nearly unlimited supply of micro brews. The bar staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Ask for the beer menu and utilize the bartenders. The food is very good, too. We enjoyed the pastrami and the chicken sandwiches. The fries are fresh and crispy. http://www.brewscafe.com/index.php
The River Road Coffee House is a wonderful place to go for coffee, latte, tea, or dessert. It is a hidden jewel. Sit in the comfy chairs and relax. Enjoy the photography and pottery, and buy something if you want. http://www.riverroadcoffeehouse.com/
The Wine Cache, located behind the Lost River Coffee Shop, is another hidden jewel. Stop in for a wine and/or beer tasting, and a look at all the wines and beers from around the world. http://www.thewinecache.com/t-about.aspx
The bookstore, Reader’s Garden, has a variety of books and especially books about Ohio.
The campus of Denison University is interesting and very pretty. Set aside some time to wander. http://www.denison.edu/
Some of the specialty shops are the Needling Yarn www.needlingyarn.com, Green Velvet www.mygreenvelever.com, and Ross’ Granville Market.
Newkirk Spa pampers! Massages, manicures, hair coloring, and facials are a few of the services they offer. The masseurs are excellent!
There are antiques, museums, a public library, and Lake Hudson for swimming, fishing, and picnicing.
Wandering is a good thing to do here. The houses are very old and therefore worth looking at. You’ll see everything from early 1800’s to the classic 1950’s. Enjoy!
The people here are friendly and are very happy to talk about their town. They can tell you where to shop, where to stay, and what to see in the area. It’s the Midwest at its best!
